Thee Sacred Souls
Thee Sacred Souls are a modern soul trio from San Diego, California, formed in 2019 by vocalist Josh Lane, drummer Alex Garcia, and bassist Sal Samano. They are signed to Daptone Records’ Penrose imprint and have become one of the most important groups in the modern soul and souldies revival. Their sound blends sweet soul, Chicano soul, deep soul, and classic 60s/70s production, built around warm analog tones, emotional vocals, and live‑band chemistry. The group’s discovery was unusual: before they even had a band name or official recordings, a short Instagram rehearsal clip of Josh singing caught the attention of Daptone co‑founder Gabe Roth, who contacted them immediately. Their earliest demos were recorded in a garage on vintage Tascam and TEAC tape machines, and that raw, analog approach became the foundation of their signature sound.
Before forming the band, Alex and Sal had already spent years playing together as a rhythm section in various underground San Diego projects, which is why their pocket is so tight and natural. Josh came from a jazz background and had never fronted a soul group before; his emotional, falsetto‑tinged delivery emerged naturally once the trio began experimenting with classic soul arrangements. Their breakout single “Can I Call You Rose?” was famously recorded in one take. Josh wanted to redo it, believing he could sing it better, but Gabe Roth insisted the emotion in the first take was perfect and refused to let them re‑cut it. That moment set the tone for the band’s philosophy: capture the feeling, not perfection.
The group records almost entirely live, using real rooms, vintage microphones, and a 1960s EMT plate reverb at Penrose Studios. They avoid digital reverb completely, relying instead on natural room ambience and a homemade echo chamber built in the basement. Their self‑titled debut album, released in 2022, features fan favorites like “Weak for Your Love,” “Easier Said Than Done,” “Love Comes Easy,” and “Will I See You Again,” and was recorded with minimal overdubs to preserve the warmth and immediacy of a live performance. Before their rise, Thee Sacred Souls played backyard shows, taco shops, and small community events around San Diego, staying close to the lowrider and Chicano soul scenes that embraced them early on.
Their vinyl releases are highly collectible due to intentionally small pressing runs, often limited to 1,000–1,500 copies, which sell out within minutes. Josh still writes many of his lyrics in the same notebook he has kept since high school, filled with emotional fragments and unfinished lines that later become songs. Their name was chosen late in the process—after they had already recorded multiple tracks—and was originally almost “The Sacred Hearts” before they changed it to avoid confusion with a gospel group. With their authentic analog sound, heartfelt performances, and dedication to classic soul craftsmanship, Thee Sacred Souls have become one of the most beloved and respected groups in today’s retro‑soul movement, carrying the spirit of 60s and 70s soul into a new generation.
