The Whispers
The Whispers are an American vocal group formed in Los Angeles in 1963 by twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott, along with Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon. They became known for tightly blended harmonies rooted in doo‑wop and early soul, later transitioning into sophisticated R&B and quiet‑storm ballads. The group recorded for several labels including Dore, Soul Clock, Janus, and most notably Solar Records, where they achieved their biggest commercial success under producer Dick Griffey. Their breakthrough came with the 1970 single “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong,” followed by major chart success in the late 1970s and 1980s with hits such as “And the Beat Goes On” and “Rock Steady.” Nicholas Caldwell remained a principal songwriter and arranger for the group until his passing in 2016. The Whispers are one of the longest‑running active soul groups, maintaining continuous activity for over six decades.
