Brenton Wood

Brenton Wood (born Alfred Jesse Smith in 1941) is an American soul singer and songwriter from Shreveport, Louisiana, later raised in Los Angeles. He began recording in the early 1960s and achieved national success in 1967 with “The Oogum Boogum Song” and “Gimme Little Sign,” both released on Double Shot Records. Wood became a key figure in West Coast sweet soul, known for his falsetto delivery and melodic songwriting. Much of his catalog was recorded with producers Joe Hooven and Jerry Winn, who shaped the Double Shot sound. His music later became foundational in Chicano lowrider oldies culture, with multiple tracks reissued on various oldies compilations throughout the 1970s–2000s. Wood continued performing into the 2020s, maintaining a strong following in California soul and oldies communities.
